In recent years drug abuse has seen a rapid increase in use among youths. Ganja, heroin, alcohol, such substances are easily available in different parts of the city and near education institutes. Being situated in close proximity with highly drug addict states such as Punjab, Uttar-Pradesh, it is hard to stop the drug trafficking inside the city.
The city has seen a multi-fold increase in the number of addicts visiting rehab centres from 2011 to 2019. In 2018, a total of 5824 patients visited the rehab centres from which 1712 patients were opioid users. And in just the first six months of 2019, 3641 patients visited rehab centres, from which 1468 were opioid users.
Experts say this is due to the easy availability of drugs and peer pressure among youths. 40% of the substance users are alcohol users, and the rest of them are addicted to cannabis, opioids, and sedatives.
The state government of Haryana has taken measures to fight addiction and started a de-addiction centre on the premise of civil hospital. And there are many private and public de-addiction centres across the city doing good work. But information on rehab centres is not readily available online.
