The Kerala police conducted a samplesurvey among the college professional students in 2018 and came up with disturbing facts. The survey revealed that about 40 per cent of the students surveyed, especially girls, had attempted using illegal drugs.

As per the records of the Kerala police, approximately 85 per cent of the drug addicts are under 25 years of age. It is indeed a grim situation in Kerala and especially in Thrissur. The only way to handle this situation is by constantly creating awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse among the young population. The social fabric of Thrissur is going through a phase of transition with the rapid inflow of drugs and substance abuse in the district.

Basically, in 2014 when the central government decided to shut down the existing bars. The regular alcohol addicts had no choice but to resort to drugs which were easily available in the district at that time. Moreover, the huge inflow of migrant labourers in the state has increased the demand and supply of drugs. Thus, indirectly, drugs have now become increasingly accessible to the population of Kerala.

Nonetheless, the administration of Thrissur has decided to establish rehabilitation centres to provide complete facilities for the treatment and recovery of drug addicts in the district. Also, de-addiction centres and nasha mukti kendras have come up in the district. These are both state-sponsored as well as private rehabilitation centres.
