Dayanand Medical College & Hospital Psychiatry Department

DMCH is a large 1300 bedded teaching hospital in Punjab. The roots of the hospital can be traced to 1934 when a medical school was started in Civil Lines, Ludhiana. This excellent hospital has a 30 bed psychiatry department. According to Dr. Ranjive Mahajan, about 30 addicts visit the centre every day for counselling. Besides counselling, the department offers detoxification with treatment for a variety of addictions. The department’s clientele ranges from low to middle class families addicted to bhukki, opium and alcohol, to elite families addicted to heroin and cocaine. The majority of the patients are 15-25 year old boys.
