Is My Child Being Bullied at School? Warning Signs Every Parent Should Know

Many parents worry about their child’s safety at school but not always in obvious ways. Sometimes it’s a quiet question in your mind: Why does my child suddenly hate going to school? Or Why do they seem different lately?

Bullying doesn’t always look dramatic. It doesn’t always involve visible injuries or clear complaints. In fact, many children who are bullied never say it out loud. Instead, they show it through changes in mood, behavior, or health.

Research consistently shows that bullying is linked to anxiety, depression, academic difficulties, and long-term emotional distress, even when it happens “occasionally” (Arseneault, 2018; Wolke & Lereya, 2015). Because of this, noticing early signs matters more than waiting for certainty.

This blog is meant to help parents pause, observe, and understand. It walks through common and subtle warning signs, how bullying can look different at different ages, and what to do if something feels off.

What Is Bullying?

Bullying is not just “kids being kids.” It is a repeated pattern of behavior meant to hurt, scare, or exclude a child who has less power in that situation. The power difference may be physical strength, social status, age, popularity, or even access to technology.

Most researchers agree that bullying has three key features: repetition, intent to harm, and an imbalance of power (Olweus, 1993; Smith et al., 2019). This is what separates bullying from a one-time argument or disagreement.

Bullying can be obvious, like hitting or name-calling. But it can also be subtle, such as being left out on purpose, mocked behind someone’s back, or targeted online. These quieter forms are often harder for adults to notice but can be just as damaging.

It’s also important to remember that bullying is about impact, not just intent. Even when someone says they were “just joking,” repeated behavior that causes distress, fear, or humiliation still counts as bullying (Modecki et al., 2014).

Different Forms of Bullying Parents Should Know About

Bullying does not look the same for every child. It can take many forms, and some are much easier to miss than others. Research shows that non-physical forms of bullying are more common and can have long-lasting emotional effects (Wolke & Lereya, 2015).

Physical bullying includes hitting, pushing, kicking, tripping, or damaging a child’s belongings. These signs are often more visible, but children may still hide them out of fear or embarrassment.

Verbal bullying involves name-calling, teasing, insults, threats, or mocking. Over time, repeated verbal attacks can strongly affect a child’s self-esteem and sense of safety (Hawker & Boulton, 2000).

Social or relational bullying is more subtle and often harder to detect. It includes being deliberately excluded, having rumors spread, being ignored, or being publicly embarrassed. This form is especially common in middle school and adolescence and is linked to loneliness and anxiety (Crick & Grotpeter, 1995).

Cyberbullying happens through phones, social media, messaging apps, or online games. It can include hurtful messages, sharing private information, posting embarrassing content, or online harassment. Because it can happen outside school hours and spread quickly, cyberbullying can feel inescapable for children (Kowalski et al., 2014).

Common Warning Signs of Bullying at School

Children who are being bullied do not always say it directly. Instead, stress often shows up through changes in behavior, emotions, or daily functioning.

Physical and visible signs may include frequent unexplained injuries, torn clothes, damaged school supplies, or missing belongings. Some children may ask for extra money or report that things are “lost” often, which can sometimes be a sign of coercion or theft.

School-related changes are common. A child who once enjoyed school may begin avoiding it, asking to stay home, or frequently complaining of illness on school days. Sudden academic decline, difficulty concentrating, or reluctance to participate in class can also be warning signs (Nakamoto & Schwartz, 2010).

Emotional and behavioral changes often appear gradually. Parents may notice increased irritability, withdrawal, frequent crying, or mood swings. Some children become unusually quiet or lose confidence, while others may show anger or frustration at home without being able to explain why.

Signs That Are Easy to Miss

Not all warning signs of bullying are obvious. Many children express distress in quiet, indirect ways, especially when they do not feel safe talking about what is happening. These subtle signs are often mistaken for “phases” or stress, which is why they can be overlooked (Arseneault, 2018).

Frequent physical complaints such as headaches, stomach aches, nausea, or feeling tired are common. These symptoms are real, even when no medical cause is found, and are strongly linked to stress and anxiety in children (Gini & Pozzoli, 2013).

Changes in sleep or appetite may also appear. A child might struggle to fall asleep, wake up from nightmares, or sleep more than usual. Some children eat noticeably less, while others may start emotional eating as a way to cope with distress.

Shifts in social habits can be an early signal. Children may suddenly stop talking about friends, avoid social situations, or withdraw from activities they once enjoyed. Spending more time alone, isolating in their room, or avoiding conversations about school can all be signs that something feels unsafe.

Increased emotional sensitivity is another clue. A child may seem unusually tearful, easily overwhelmed, or reactive to small situations. These responses often reflect accumulated stress rather than the immediate trigger.

How Bullying Signs Change With Age

In younger children, signs are often more physical and emotional. They may cry easily, become clingy, or show sudden fear around school. Many express distress through stomach aches, headaches, or tantrums because they do not yet have the language to explain what is happening.

In pre-teens, bullying often becomes more social and relational. Parents may notice mood swings, withdrawal from friends, or reluctance to attend school events. This age group may feel confused or embarrassed about peer rejection and may try to hide it to fit in (Crick & Grotpeter, 1995).

In teenagers, signs are usually more internalized. Adolescents may withdraw emotionally, spend long periods alone, or become unusually secretive, especially around phones and social media. Changes in sleep, increased irritability, or loss of interest in school and hobbies are common. Research shows that bullying during adolescence is linked to higher risks of anxiety, depression, and low self-worth (Copeland et al., 2013).

Why Don’t Kids Ask for Help? Understanding Behavior as Communication

Many children who are being bullied do not directly ask for help. This is not because they are unaffected, but because speaking up can feel risky. Research shows that fear of making the situation worse is one of the most common reasons children stay silent (Smith et al., 2019).

Some children worry about retaliation from peers. Others fear being labeled as “weak” or believe adults will not understand or will overreact. Older children and adolescents may feel ashamed or blame themselves, assuming the bullying is somehow their fault (Hawker & Boulton, 2000).

Because of this silence, distress often shows up through behavior rather than words. Children may become irritable, withdrawn, unusually quiet, or emotionally reactive at home. Some may act out, break rules, or show anger that seems out of proportion to the situation. These behaviors are often misunderstood as discipline issues, when they are actually stress responses.

Younger children may regress, becoming clingy, having trouble sleeping alone, or losing previously learned independence. Older children may isolate themselves, disengage from family conversations, or spend excessive time online as a way to escape.

What to Do If You Notice Possible Signs of Bullying

Noticing signs of bullying can feel overwhelming for parents. The goal is not to rush into action, but to respond calmly and thoughtfully. Research shows that children cope better when they feel believed, supported, and involved in decisions about what happens next (Yablon, 2017).

Start by creating emotional safety. Choose a quiet, relaxed moment to talk. Use open-ended questions and gentle observations, such as noticing changes rather than making accusations. Avoid pushing for details or demanding answers. Feeling safe is often what allows children to open up.

Listen more than you try to fix. It can be tempting to immediately solve the problem, but children often need validation first. Acknowledge their feelings and let them know it is not their fault. Being heard reduces shame and builds trust (Arseneault, 2018).

Observe and document patterns. Take note of repeated behaviors, physical complaints, school avoidance, or mood changes. Keeping track of dates and situations can help clarify what is happening and is useful if school support becomes necessary.

Involve the school thoughtfully. If concerns persist, reaching out to a teacher, school counselor, or administrator can help. Research supports school-based interventions that focus on safety and support rather than punishment alone (Ttofi & Farrington, 2011).

Seek additional support if needed. If a child shows ongoing distress, anxiety, or withdrawal, professional support can help them process the experience and rebuild confidence. Early support reduces the risk of longer-term emotional difficulties.

Supporting Your Child After Bullying: What Helps and What Doesn’t

Supporting a child after bullying is not just about stopping the behavior, it is also about helping them feel safe, valued, and confident again. Research shows that warm, responsive parenting plays a key role in buffering the emotional impact of bullying (Bowes et al., 2010).

Reinforce safety and self-worth. Remind your child that being bullied is not their fault. Consistent reassurance helps reduce shame and self-blame, which are common after repeated peer harm.

Strengthen supportive relationships. Encourage time with friends, relatives, or activities where your child feels accepted and competent. Positive social connections can protect against anxiety and low self-esteem (Holt et al., 2015).

Help build coping and emotional skills. Teach children simple ways to express feelings, set boundaries, and seek help. For some children, talking to a counselor can support emotional processing and confidence rebuilding.

Be patient with recovery. Healing takes time. Some children may seem “fine” outwardly but still carry fear or self-doubt. Ongoing check-ins signal that support is available whenever they need it.

What to Avoid

• Avoid minimizing the experience by saying things like “ignore it” or “it’s not a big deal.” These responses can increase shame and silence.
• Avoid blaming your child or pushing them to “toughen up,” which can damage trust and self-esteem.
• Avoid confronting bullies or their families in anger, as this can escalate the situation and increase risk.
• Avoid forcing quick solutions before your child feels ready to talk or act.

Conclusion

Bullying is often quiet, gradual, and easy to miss but its impact on a child’s emotional well-being can be lasting if left unaddressed. Paying attention to changes, taking your concerns seriously, and responding with calm support can make a meaningful difference. When children feel believed, protected, and emotionally safe, they are more likely to heal, regain confidence, and trust that they do not have to face difficult experiences alone.
